The casual market knows this in the abstract – every book accounts for left-right splits in pitcher pricing – but the lineup card is where the actual handedness counts get locked in, and the morning watchlist built on the projected lineup may be off by one or two batters when the actual card comes out.

The Steal Profile: Speed in the Right Order

Stolen base props depend on a different lineup variable: the speed tier of the hitter and the on-base track record of the hitters in front of him in the order. A hitter who runs a 30-ft-per-second sprint speed batting second behind a leadoff hitter with a .380 OBP is in a structurally different SB context from the same speed hitter batting eighth with a low-OBP slot in front of him. League-average sprint speed sits around 27 ft/sec; elite is 28.5+ and the top tier is 30+. The speed alone tells you the floor of the SB market; the lineup-construction overlay tells you whether the floor will see opportunities.

The 2023 rule changes – bigger bases moving from 15 to 18 inches square, the two-step-off pickoff cap, the pitch clock – pushed the league-wide SB success rate from the high 70s into the mid-80s, which has structurally inflated the SB market. The same speed hitter against a backup catcher with a 2.10 pop time has a meaningfully better SB profile than the same hitter against a starting catcher at 1.93.

Reading the Bench: Pinch-Hit and Late-Inning Substitution Logic

The lineup card is not the full story of who hits. It is the projection of who hits in the first plate appearance. By the late innings, pinch-hit substitutions, double switches, and defensive replacements rewrite the lineup. For prop markets settled on full-game totals, the substitutions matter – a hitter who is pinch-hit for in the eighth has lost a plate appearance from his projected count, and the prop ticket built on his projected PA total now resolves on a smaller sample.

The substitution risk is not equal across all hitters. The cleanup hitter is rarely pinch-hit for. The seven-through-nine slots are where the substitution risk lives, especially in NL parks where the pitcher slot was historically subbed out routinely and where the universal designated hitter has not entirely eliminated late-game lineup churn.
